Meru Oak Tree Seedling (Vitex keniensis)

KSh 500.00

A rare, high-value indigenous hardwood endemic to Kenya’s highland forests — sought after for premium furniture timber and native reforestation

Category:

Description

Meru Oak, locally known as Muhuru (Vitex keniensis), is one of Kenya's most prized — and increasingly rare — indigenous hardwoods, endemic to highland forest areas such as Mt. Kenya and the Aberdares. Its distinctive palmate (hand-shaped) leaves and dense, attractive timber make it valuable both ecologically and commercially. Because wild populations are under pressure, nursery-raised seedlings play an important role in conservation and sustainable timber production.

Growing Info:

  • Mature height: 20–30 m
  • Growth rate: Slow–moderate
  • Water needs: Moderate–high; suited to highland/higher rainfall areas
  • Sunlight: Full sun to partial shade when young
  • Soil: Fertile, well-drained highland soils
  • Spacing: 6–8 m apart
  • Uses: Premium timber, furniture, conservation planting, biodiversity
