Regenerative Carbon Farming & Living Laboratories in Kajiado, Kenya
At We Are The Farmers Initiative, our Regenerative Carbon Farming and Living Laboratories program is designed to equip communities in Kajiado County with practical, climate-smart agricultural skills that restore ecosystems while improving livelihoods.
In the face of increasing climate challenges across Kenya’s arid and semi-arid lands (ASALs), regenerative agriculture offers a sustainable solution. Through this program, we train farmers, youth, and community groups on how to rebuild soil health, conserve water, and adopt resilient farming systems that increase productivity without harming the environment.
What We Do
Our work is centered at the “Wakulima Ni Sisi” Demonstration Farm, a hands-on learning space where theory meets practice.
Through our Living Laboratories approach, participants actively engage in:
- Agroforestry and permaculture design
- Soil regeneration and composting techniques
- Water harvesting and conservation methods
- Crop diversification and intercropping systems
- Organic farming and natural pest control
We run Farmers Field Schools and workshops that allow participants to learn by doing—ensuring knowledge is not only understood but applied within their own farms and households.
Building Climate Resilience Through Carbon Farming
A key focus of this program is carbon farming, a regenerative approach that captures and stores carbon in soil and vegetation.
By integrating trees into farming systems and improving soil management practices, we help:
- Reduce atmospheric carbon emissions
- Improve soil fertility and structure
- Increase water retention in dry environments
- Enhance long-term agricultural productivity
This approach is especially critical for communities in Kajiado, where climate variability continues to affect food production and livelihoods.
Impact on Communities
Our Regenerative Carbon Farming program directly supports household-level transformation.
Participants gain the ability to:
- Produce their own nutritious food sustainably
- Reduce dependency on expensive external inputs
- Generate income through surplus produce
- Strengthen resilience against drought and climate shocks
Through hands-on training and continuous support, we are creating a network of empowered farmers who are not only adapting to climate change but actively reversing its effects.
Why Our Approach Works
What makes our program unique is its community-driven and practical approach.
We do not rely on theory alone. Instead, we:
- Co-create solutions with local communities
- Use demonstration farms as real-life learning spaces
- Promote indigenous knowledge alongside modern techniques
- Focus on long-term sustainability, not short-term fixes
As a youth-led initiative, we also bring innovation and energy into agriculture—making it more attractive and accessible to younger generations.
